ABERDEEN, S.D. — ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù State University reached its highest enrollment in university history this fall, welcoming 3,890 total students. The achievement was driven by 470 new undergraduate degree-seeking students. The freshman class numbered 370, representing a 28% increase over fall 2025, and the largest since 2013. 100 transfer students also enrolled.
Of the 370 freshmen, 36% come from Northeastern South Dakota. Across the entire degree-seeking undergraduate population, 69% are South Dakota residents, and 80% of all enrolled students call South Dakota home.
The surge is visible across campus. On-campus housing grew 12.3% this fall, with 593 students living in residence halls compared to 528 last year. Classrooms, the dining hall, parking lots, and student events all reflect a noticeably larger student body.
"This is extraordinary growth," said President Alan LaFave. "Behind every number is a student who chose ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù. What makes these results even more meaningful is that we're seeing growth in nearly every enrollment metric. New freshmen, transfer students, graduate students, and online learners all chose ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù this fall."
Strong Performance Across All Programs
The growth is not concentrated in a single program. ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù saw robust recruitment across its academic portfolio. The largest incoming cohorts enrolled in:
- Elementary Education
- Business Administration
- Nursing
- Human Performance

Retention Reflects Student Success
Beyond new enrollment, ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù saw encouraging performance on a critical metric: student retention. The university's 83% retention rate represents a 14% increase from fall 2025. This is ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù's highest retention rate since 2007, indicating that students who enroll at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù are staying and succeeding.
"²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù's retention rate demonstrates that students are finding the academic support, relationships, and sense of belonging they need to succeed," said Eric Kline. "Our growth in retention reflects the dedicated work of ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù's faculty and staff."
A Regional Asset Meets Regional Need
